A new generation of white pigment: Basetone White Ti-Free

Codyeco is introducing an innovative white pigment into the market of leather finishing called BASETONE WHITE TI-FREE. This white pigment is formulated with insoluble inorganic and non-harmful substance and 100% free of TiO_2.

The technology of BASETONE WHITE TI-FREE allows to reach very high covering power and excellent physical fastness properties without losing refraction-index with a consequent great white intensity. Due to its special formulation, this pigment perfectly fit when used on metal free white leather following ISO specification 15115: 2019.

Ready for market release

The production trials have shown very positive results and we are now ready to release BASETONE WHITE TI-FREE into the market. “Our mission, and that of our mother company Smit & Zoon, is to create a socially and environmentally sustainable leather value chain by 2025. About Titanium Dioxide

Titanium is the ninth element in terms of relative abundance. Titanium dioxide occurs in nature in five different crystalline forms; the most important are rutile and anatase. Titanium dioxide is industrially purified through a chlorine and carbon coke process. Titanium is widely used as (e.g.) catalizer, UV filter in sun cream, food dyes (E-171), biotechnologies and medical use (prostheses) and white pigments because of its brightness and high refractive index.

Due to recent constraints on the use of Titanium Dioxide due to possible toxicology, as expressed by ECHA (European Chemical Agency), we have been working on this innovation to bring a new generation of white pigment free of TiO2 into the market.

Characteristics and application

BASETONE WHITE TI‐FREE is a casein‐free and titanium‐free white pigmented paste with good tintorial strength to be used on all types of articles. BASETONE WHITE TI‐FREE has excellent physical performances:

• PVC migration EN IOS 15701: vote 5 (evaluation with the Grey Scale)
• Lightfastness EN ISO 105 B02‐ 150 hours: vote 8 (evaluation with Blue Scale)
• Heat resistance 30’ >200°C.
